A gantry crane is one of the few types of overhead cranes. Gantry cranes however have supports that hold them up fixed in a location. The crane cannot move and therefore everything that needs to be moved using the crane has to be brought to it. The supports of the crane form a very big rectangular frame which can be moved to the right, left, forward or backward by the crane. Anything that a gantry crane can reach is known to be in its operating area.
Gantry cranes are very commonly used in large factories where they can be used to move things along the floor of the factories while the products are assembled slowly. For example, if a company builds large metal objects used in any equipment, it would need to move those metal parts. The parts can arrive to the factory on a truck and parked in the operating area of the crane. A gantry crane can then be used to unload all the metal parts required in the factory. Also the crane can move the parts around the factory, usually along assembly lines as the parts are assembled. And once the product is completed, it can be loaded into a truck with the help of a gantry crane.
Gantry Cranes Come in All Sizes
Although gantry cranes usually come in huge models used in large industries, there are also smaller models in the markets that can work in small scale warehouses and factories. Gantry cranes can either have adjustable or fixed height as per the requirements of the purchaser and can be made of steel or aluminum. Usually the buyer needs to determine the task the crane would be used for before he can decide upon buying an aluminum body or a steel body crane.
A gantry crane is designed with two upright beams and a cross beam. It has two legs shaped in an A design and has wheels on the bottom so that the crane is portable. In its smallest version, a gantry crane can be successfully used to move large parts, molds and also containers from one location to another or between assembly and work stations. In a warehouse, the crane can be used to move bulky and heavy objects across distances whereas eight foot is being the smallest and twenty foot being the largest distance depending on the model of the crane.
When you’re considering buying a gantry crane, be very careful. Keep in mind that not all companies can be reliable and therefore its best to go with one that has a consistent history of designing high end cranes that can withstand the rigor of hard work and also multiple uses. A gantry crane, even if small in size, is not inexpensive therefore wise investments should be made. Always look for a company that has good reputation in your niche of choice. And never forget to check the crane first and confirm its warranty. Check for general defects and go for equipment’s with at least 5 years of warranty.
